Litany of the Life and Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ
Filius

The Litany of the Life and Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ has been a very popular litany for over four hundred years. It appears in several forms in many popular prayer books over the course of the last four centuries. In Latin it appears in such works as the "Sacrae Litaniae Variae" by Francois DuBois, 1615; the "Paradisus Animae Christianae" by Jacob Merlo Horst, 1644; and the "Coeleste Palmetum" by Wilhelm Nakatenus. In English it appears in such prayer books as the "Golden Manual" and Fr Lasances's many prayer books that appeared at the start of the 20th century. More recently it has appeared in "Kyrie Eleison, Two Hundred Litanies", by Benjamin Francis Musser, 1945, and "A Prayerbook of Favorite Litanies", Fr. Albert Herbert, 1985.

The Litany has seen several forms over the years with various additions and deletions. Generally the oldest forms of the litany are the longest, with more modern forms tending to be considerably shortened. The Litany is sometimes split into two Litanies, one on the Life of Christ and the other on the Passion of Christ, as was done in the "Golden Manual". Sometimes it is just given as the Litany of the Passion of Christ. At one time there was an indulgence attached to the Litany by Pope Pius VII in 1820.

The Litany draws extensively from Scripture and is perhaps one of the most complete summaries of the birth, life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus that appears in prayer form. It is probably because it is so complete, and thus rather long, that later editors often shortened it. The complete Litany is given below.

[Phil 2:8-11] Our Lord Jesus Christ humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even unto death on the Cross. For which, God hath exalted Him and hath given Him a name which is above all names: That in the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that our Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father. [Phil 2:8-11]

The text is based upon the text found the "Sacrae Litaniae Variae", Franciscus Du Bois, 1615. Curiously Du Bois used the nominative case endings in this edition, while other versions of the text all use the vocative forms. The vocative makes more sense and was used in place of the nominative in the above. Also in Du Bois' work, there was no concluding prayer. The Litany simply ended with the Pater & Ave, which is consistent with several older editions of the Litany, and quite common in old Litanies. Several different conclusions may be found amongst various editions of the text. The one chosen here is used by P. Gaudentius. It is found at the conclusion of such texts as the Hours of the Cross and the Seven Prayers of St Gregory. Tr. MWM.
